Fashion Campaigns

Take a step in Anja Konstantinova’s shoes and score a career in the high fashion world modelling for the likes of Vogue or Marie Claire. Focusing more on her striking looks than her 5”4’, the Russian-Australian has broken the stereotype that denies petite models their chance to appear for top designers such as Moschino, Chloe, Versace or Chanel. She is an inspiration to other short hopefuls who feel unrepresented in the fashion modelling world showcasing that editorial images are just as stunning and visions can be achieved by shorter individuals.

Anja is not the only petite frame to become a successful model with a less than average height. Take British models Kate Moss and Twiggy for example. Two top models who are iconic for their involvement in the fashion industry and recognised worldwide. Both do not meet the stereotypical height that successful models demand yet Kate Moss has posed for many magazine covers such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle Magazine. She’s travelled the world flying to all the fashion capitals such as New York, Paris and Milan. Her height certainly hasn’t stopped her. If an industry expert takes a liking to you, your height can be overlooked even for runway models. To create a slick line up heels can be used to create the illusion of longer legs and height.

American model Devon Aoki has not let the average height of a supermodel stop her. At 5’5″ she is slightly smaller than Kate Moss yet has modelled for Versace, Lancome and Chanel becoming one of the shortest runway models to date. French model, Laetitia Casta has also enjoyed a successful modelling career at 5’7″. She was even a Victoria’s Secret Angel from 1998-2000.

Catalogue Modelling

Height is not as important in catalogue modelling allowing shorter models to appear in ad campaigns both printed and online versions. A variety of figures are hired for photoshoots focusing on their ability to model rather than their height measurement. Commercial models are usually chosen for ad campaigns due to their look, confidence and potential rather than a towering height.

However, when attending castings shorter models should stand with a good posture. This will ensure that your tiny frame is not lost amongst others. Presentation and confidence is key in securing the role as your small height will probably go unnoticed if you have a good stature and presence.

Niche Brands

There are labels who design for petite brands and require female models to promote their clothing. It is important for their designs to be shown on a short model to ensure that their brand earns a good reputation for truly fitting a petite individual. If a brand declares that they are designing for a specific niche they must follow through with exactly that. Stating that they are petite brand without hiring shorter models who fit their demographic would be a big mistake. Customers need to witness how the garment fits and falls on a petite frame. The only way to do this is to actually hire a model who is shorter and has smaller features.

Body Part Modelling

If your height does present a problem, body part modelling stands as a legit option to consider. If you possess a particularly great pair of legs, hands or feet you may just earn a decent living. Shapely carves, symmetrical toes or delicate fingers are needed for printed ad campaigns and TV commercials. These ads promote products such as tights, shaving cream, nail varnish and fake tan. However, it is essential that you take care of your digits as the focus upon them demands perfection. To carve a successful modelling career you must take great care of your body part. This includes protection from sun exposure, cuts, scraps, burns, spots etc. Many successful models go to great lengths to protect their hands, feet and legs to avoid being turned down for a role.

Beauty Modelling

To advertise the latest shampoo, mascara or lipstick a great height is not needed. Cosmetic and beauty brands such as Lancome, Rimmel and Estee Lauder will either hire a well known face such as a top model/celebrity or a unknown model with striking features. When photographing just the face, height doesn’t really come into it.

Get in Touch with a Modelling Agency

It just goes to show that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. If you measure smaller than the average height of a model, your considered ‘plus-size’ by fashion industry standards or you think your ethnicity might be an issue, do not give up on your dreams of being a model. Contact many different modelling agencies to see if they like your look.

Be prepared to be rejected as this is a natural part of the industry. Channel fashion models, Kate Moss, Twiggy and Devon Aoki to believe that anything is possible. There are many modelling agencies that specialise in this area and take on petite models daily. The fashion industry is constantly changing. Female models are shaping a much different picture that includes plus size, petite and different races. They’re campaigning to fill a gap in the modelling industry. Shorter models are definitely not overlooked and modelling agencies are reacting to this.

These are some of the avenues that shorter models can pursue to carve a modelling career in the industry dominated by taller individuals. If you are a petite model we would love to hear from you to find out the kinds of jobs that you are hired for.
